Do Your Roofing Materials Meet Climate Regulations? Let’s Check.
In early 2021, new regulations took effect in the U.S. to phase out harmful greenhouse gases called hydrofluorocarbons, or HFCs. HFCs are made up of fluorine and hydrogen atoms. They are found in blowing agents used in spray foam roof adhesive and insulation. The industrial chemical allows the material to “foam up,” expand, and deliver great thermal resistance (R-value). Hydrofluorocarbons are also found in air conditioning and refrigeration systems. While HFCs have great thermal resistance, they also come with high global warming potential (GWP). Products with high GWP trap more heat in the earth's atmosphere and thus contribute more to global warming. Long story short — HFCs are bad for the environment. When...

We often get asked, ‘Can you make 5.2-inch thick polyiso?’ or ‘Can you make 8-inch ISO?’ Even if we could, there’s a good reason to use multiple, thinner layers of insulation. Whenever you need a layer of insulation, you actually need TWO layers of insulation! If a single layer of rigid foam insulation boards gets used, there’s a high risk of heat gain or loss at all of the joints between the boards. These areas are called “Cold” insulation joints, and maybe you’ve even seen them: when the heat escapes up through a light dusting of snow on the rooftop, melting a neat 4’x8’ grid pattern. Use Multiple Layers of Polyiso with Joints Offset The best practice is to always use multiple layers of insulation, with the...

Safety First! Tips to Reduce Fire Risk on the Roof Dry outdoor conditions increase the risk of static electricity and solvent based products release vapors that may be unexpectedly ignited by spark or static discharge. Most reports of solvent flash fires involve bonding adhesives, steel decks, isocyanurate insulation, and single-ply membranes. Static charge can be created by dragging insulation boards across each other, moving membrane sheets across insulation, even from walking on the insulation or insulated roof. Removing the factory-applied release liner from self-adhering GenFlex membranes also has the potential to generate static electricity. Here are a few measures that can be taken by roofing crews and...
